Butterfield 8 aims to revive and glorify the traditions of the past, when people referred to the first two digits of a telephone number as letters (288 was referred to as BU-8). Named after a popular Elizabeth Taylor thriller, Butterfield 8 even gives her character its own signature cocktail, the Gloria Wandrous cosmopolitan, which is a perfect accessory at the granite bar with elegant chandeliers dazzling overhead. Mahogany walls and large half-circle booths contribute to the old New York feel, as does the jazz music playing overhead. The restaurant menu departs from the theme with appetizer offerings of Texas chili and hot Italian sausage queso served with tri-color tortilla chips. A rib eye steak gets the Butterfield 8 Cajun spice treatment, paired with wasabi mashed potatoes and cream corn. For dessert, the southern food theme continues with Louisiana bread pudding topped with a Maker's Mark bourbon sauce, or you can bring it back home with the New York Style cheesecake, drizzled with a Grand Marnier berry compote. -- Ashley Lederer (Photo: Noah Kalina) |
